Rum is one of the most widely distilled spirits in the world, and is produced wherever you find sugar cane. The rum drunk in Europe is produced mostly in the West Indies and Guyana, but a great deal of rum is also made in South America, South Africa and Australia. It can be made from the fermented juice of the sugar cane or from fermented molasses and the flavour of rums varies enormously from the neutral whites of Puerto Rico and Cuba, to the full-bodied rums of Jamaica.
