Tempranillo

This is the grape variety of the Rioja region of Spain and is also widely planted all over the northern and central regions. There are some wines designed to be drunk young, however Tempranillo is at its best when aged in oak. Expect ripe, red fruit flavours with spice, tobacco and herbs. The best Riojas are rich and full-bodied and make excellent food wines. Australia is now also making some good Tempranillos.
