The White Lion had been carrying a cargo of several tons of peppercorns, nutmeg and cloves as well as diamonds and Ming porcelain. When an international salvage team found the wreck in 1976, it transpired that the huge volume of peppercorns had survived more than 350 years under water, and the dense 6-ft layer of spices had helped to preserve much of the Ming pottery perfectly. White Lion spiced rum is an authentic homage to the favoured liquor of the 17th C sailors who first experimented with combining pure white rum with exotic Oriental spices. |
