Brandy is the generic name for a distilled grape spirit. Cognac and Armagnac are still the most highly regarded of all the world's brandies. Cognac is produced in two separate distillations and is matured in Limousin oak. Cognacs are classified according to the length of time they have been aged, as VS, VSOP and XO. Armagnac, traditionally a single distilled spirit matured in 'black' Gascon oak, claims a longer history than Cognac and is generally softer and rounder on the nose and palate. Some houses produce vintage Armagnacs, made from grapes harvested in an outstanding year. Fine Armagnacs and Cognacs are usually taken neat as a digestif. Armagnac Marquis de Montesquiou Napoleon is made from predominantly Ugni Blanc with some Folle Blanche, grown on sandy soil in Bas-Armagnac which produces brandies with aromas of prunes and on chalky-clay soil in Ténarèze which has aromas more reminiscent of violets. It is supple on the palate with strong flavours of peaches and apricots ending with woody and vanilla hints and a slight animal flavour. Packaged in a carafe shaped bottle in a gift box.
